Medication-Assisted Cat Grooming
Let's be honest - when a cat doesn't want to be brushed or clipped, they certainly will not cooperate. In certain instances such as long-haired breeds in the tropics, or debilitating arthritis affecting a cat's ability to keep themself meticulously groomed, clipping with the help of medication may be indicated.
Sometimes the easiest way to do this for both your cat and the human offering the grooming, is with the help of some sedation. It is not worth your cat getting so distressed and pushing them to the point of intense fear and irritation, just to avoid medication. It is also not desirable to get scratched or bitten by an unhappy cat!
The medication used is chosen based specifically on each and every patient. It enables the procedure to be done as quickly as possible, with no pain to either the cat or the groomer! Some patients may even require a quick bathe whilst sedated, something which definitely cannot be done whilst awake. A nail clip can also be effortlessly performed at the same time.
In Dr. Anita's experience, most long-haired cats thoroughly enjoy the feeling of a shorn coat when they wake up. Imagine having to stay in your winter clothes, in summer. There is also a slight amnesic effect to the sedation, so often your cat wakes up and doesn't even realise what has happened - other than the fact that they are cooler and lighter!
